The laying of the first block of the Faculty building by the first President of The Republic of Indonesia, Ir Sukarno, on the 27th of April 1952 marked the start of the Faculty of Agriculture building development. Quoting The President’s inspirational speech at the opening ceremony:
“Neglecting the efforts to ensure undisrupted food supply for Indonesian people will lead to catastrophes. Food security is a matter of life and death” (part of Ir Soekarno ‘s speech at the opening ceremony of Faculty of Agriculture, Baranangsiang, campus, 1952)
The messages in this historical speech are still relevant to the current agricultural condition in Indonesia, particularly those related to food securities and agricultural education.
The faculty of Agriculture IPB was first established as Faculteit van Landbouwwetenschap (Faculty of Agricultural Science) or Lembaga Pendidikan Tinggi Pertanian (LPTP) in 1940. LPTP was further evolved and developed into Faculty of Agriculture in 1950, one of the Faculties under The University of Indonesia (UI), which is one of the oldest Faculties in UI.
Following their development and expansion, Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine formed an education institute independent of The University of Indonesia.
Between 1984 to 2005 Faculty of Agriculture had nine disciplines under five departments: Department of Agronomy, Soil Science, Plant Protection, Nutrition, and Agricultural Social Economy.
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture had four disciplines, Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Breeding and Seed Technology, and Landscape Architecture. Department of Agricultural Social Economics had three, Agribusiness, EPS and Communication of Community Development. Each of the three other departments had one discipline, i.e. Soil Science, Plant Protection, and Nutrition Science.
IPB organisation was restructured and set to become a state-owned enterprise (Badan Hukum Milik Negara, BUMN) in 2005. Courses and disciplines were evaluated then either merged or expanded; and new programs were developed. Department of Agricultural Social Economics and Nutrition Science become new Faculties, i.e. Faculty of Economics and Management (FEM), and Faculty of Human Ecology (FEMA).
